What are Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and why you need them

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a transparent document that details the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle. 

EPDs, typically valid for five years, are based on standards such as ISO 14040/14044, ISO 14025, and EN 15804. They also support earning credits in certification schemes like LEED and BREEAM.

EPDs and Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA)

EPDs are grounded in life-cycle assessment (LCA) but go beyond it by adhering to additional standards. There are different types of EPDs covering various product life-cycle stages;

  • Cradle-to-gate: Covers only the manufacturing process.
  • Cradle-to-grave: Includes the entire life cycle, from manufacturing to disposal.
  • Cradle-to-gate with options: Adds selected stages from cradle-to-grave.

Business Benefits of EPDs

Though voluntary, stakeholders increasingly demand EPDs. Benefits include:

  • Market differentiation: Stand out by using or creating EPDs.
  • Regulatory compliance: Required for public procurement in the EU and environmental marketing in Belgium.
  • Certification credits: EPDs contribute to earning LCA credits, recognised by LEED, BREEAM, and other systems.

How to Create an EPD

Creating an EPD involves five key steps:

  1. Collect data: Gather data on raw materials, resource use, and waste.
  2. Conduct a life-cycle assessment: Ensure it aligns with the Product Category Rule (PCR).
  3. Prepare a background report: Detail the LCA methodology and assumptions.
  4. Third-party verification: Get the EPD verified to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  5. Publication: Submit the EPD for public release through a program operator.

Third-party verification ensures EPDs provide reliable, standardised, and comparable information. It’s essential for recognition in certification schemes and regulatory requirements. Be cautious of non-verified EPDs, as they may not be widely accepted and could undermine your investment.
